The Trousered Ape

Inspired by The Abolition of Man – C.S. Lewis

What kind of man can we produce

When we rid him of virtue

And set his mind a loose?

Take away morality, guilt and shame

Tell him they’re constructs

Of those who rigged the game.

Tell him life has only one goal,

To preserve his family,

That’s it, that’s the whole.

If we train him like this, bereft of reason

He’ll serve his own belly,

Give up his mind and higher meaning.

When he has no virtue there is no other fate

For he has no grounding

He is… but a Trousered Ape.
